Training Facilities

Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital is an intensive specialized treatment, training, and research center for the State of Indiana Division of Mental Health system. It is a 159-bed hospital providing inpatient services for adults, adolescents, and children. Service units are divided into Adult General Psychiatry, Clinical Neuroscience Research, Transition Services, and Youth Services.

Riley Hospital for Children, an IU Health Partner, is the state's most comprehensive hospital for children and one of the largest children's hospitals in the country. The Riley Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, the primary site for the Child and Adolescent Residency Program, offers services to patients from the entire state of Indiana including consultation, and diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of emotional, social, behavioral, learning, and family problems. Training is provided in diagnostic interviewing, psychological assessment, family therapy, behavioral therapy, individual psychotherapy, and pediatric psychopharmacology. The clinic also provides inpatient consultation-liaison services for physically ill children including cancer victims and burn patients who present with emotional difficulties. Specialty clinics include the internationally recognized Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center; the Obsessive-Compulsive, Tourette's and Anxiety Disorders Clinic; and the ADHD/Disruptive Behavior Disorders Clinic.  Opportunities to participate in extensive innovative and cutting-edge clinical research are also available.

Eskenazi Health is a municipal hospital. During the mid-1990's, Eskanazi was selected for three consecutive years as one of the Top 100 Performing Hospitals in the nation and was the only hospital in Indiana to receive this designation three years in a row.  It houses the Midtown Community Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center founded in 1969. Midtown provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for all types of emotional and behavioral problems and is one of the largest mental health centers in the nation.

Eskenazi is building a new 1.2 million square foot facility, which will house 315 inpatient beds, 18 operating rooms, 12 labor and delivery rooms and a 90 bed treatment room emergency department. Eskanazi will also construct an ambulatory clinic building, an administrative office building and a central utility plant on the site. The new facility is scheduled to be completed in late 2013.

Methodist Hospital, an IU Health Partner is the site of the acute inpatient service for child and adolescent psychiatry. Residents spend one to two months on service. Methodist Hospital is a large general hospital and is connected to Riley Hospital by an elevated train system. The approximate time between Riley and Methodist Hospital is 15 minutes.

IU-Moi

Residents may elect to do a rotation on the pediatrics and psychiatry services at the IU-Moi program in Eldoret, Kenya. This partnership began in 1989. The hospital and clinics are staffed by full time members of the internal medicine and pediatrics faculty. IU faculty, residents and medical students participate in the care of patients in the medical school hospital and 49 urban and rural clinics located throughout western Kenya. Residents live on the IU compound in apartment/dormitory settings approximately 10 minutes walk from the hospital and medical school.
