Psychiatry Summer Internship Program

The Psychiatry Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity to learn about neuroscience research and clinical care in the field of psychiatry through an 8-week placement with Department of Psychiatry faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Parameters
The 8-week program is open to three students and provides a stipend of $2000. The program begins on Monday, May 28, 2013 and ends on Friday, July 19, 2013. The work week is Monday through Friday with an expected maximum of 40 hours weekly.

Applicant Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 (on 4-point scale).

Program Overview
Each participant will be assigned to one of the primary tracks outlined below and activities will vary by track. The first three weeks of the program will focus on the observation of psychiatric clinical services with emphasis on the clinical care of patients related to the primary chosen track. During the second half of the program, participants will continue limited time in clinical observation while spending the majority of effort in the research and development of a paper related to the chosen track. The expectation is that all participants will complete a paper ready for submission to a psychiatric journal during the 8-week program.

The program also includes opportunities for:

  • Self-study from selected readings and electronic media.

  • Informal shadowing of residents in the Department of Psychiatry.

  • Informal group meetings with Department of Psychiatry leaders.

Primary Tracks
Please note: All applicants will be required to choose one primary track as part of the application process. Applicants will be permitted to also submit a second choice track.


Track 1 Focus: Children and Adolescents and the Treatment of Pain and Anxiety

Primary Site: Riley Hospital for Children

Description:

  • Interns will have exposure to outpatient clinical assessments, medication management, and therapy of patients with chronic pain and/or anxiety

  • Interns will have opportunities to observe consultation-liaison work on inpatient pediatric units within Riley Hospital.

  • Interns will shadow social workers, physicians, psychologists treating the most common psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents.

  • Interns will write a paper on a topic related to the treatment of children and adolescents with chronic pain symptoms.

Track 2 Focus: Chronically mentally ill patients that are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Primary Site: Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital

Description:

  • Interns will have exposure to an inpatient unit in a state-operated intermediate-stay psychiatric hospital with a particular focus on the psychiatric care of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing patients.

  • Interns will have the opportunity to observe psychiatric and psychological assessments, individual and group psychotherapies as well as medication consultations.

  • Interns will be able to observe the multi-disciplinary treatment process via observation of daily rounds and weekly treatment planning meetings.

  • Interns will also have opportunities to participate in didactic discussions involving patient case presentations and psychopharmacology.

  • As the research component of the internship, interns will be able to select a topic in the literature on Deaf mental health and write a literature review, complete a case study on a patient or participate in ongoing data collection and write-up of an original research study.

Track 3 Focus: Outpatient treatment of major mood, anxiety, and personality disorders

Primary Site: IU Health Methodist Hospital

Description:

  • Interns will be exposed to psychiatric diagnostic examinations, psychotherapeutic techniques, and medication management for the treatment of major mood, anxiety, and personality disorders in an outpatient setting.

  • Interns will also be exposed to psychiatric diagnostic examinations, psychotherapeutic techniques, and medication management for the treatment of co-morbid mood and anxiety disorders in both psychiatric and medical patients.

  • Interns will have the opportunity to observe consultation-liaison work on adult inpatient medical units and the opportunity to interact with multi-disciplinary treatment team members, including psychiatric nurses, social workers, physicians, and psychologists.

  • Interns will participate in the development of multi-disciplinary group-based treatment programs.

  • Interns will have the opportunity to participate in a literature review, data collection, and may participate in psychosocial research programs.

Applications:

  • Require the submission of a CV including grade point average. Note: Minimum grade point of 3.3 (on 4 point scale) required.

  • Require the designation of one primary track of interest with a second choice track permitted. Note: Only one track will be assigned for the entire 8 weeks.

  • Require a statement (maximum 500 words) outlining why the applicant is interested in the Psychiatry Summer Internship Program and the specific chosen track.

  • Require a writing sample from coursework within the past year (maximum 10 pages).

  • May include a brief telephone interview for final candidates.
