Maria C. Poor, M.D.
Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry

Personal Statement  I am passionate about many parts of my work but the top three are providing quality patient care, a great learning environment for everyone from patients to peers, and adequate mental health care for survivors following a disaster.  Indiana University has given me the ideal environment for all three of these.  I am responsible for the inpatient treatment of 29 severely mentally ill Indiana residents at Larue D. Carter State Hospital.  This position has allowed me to be involved in clinical teaching for the third year psychiatry clerkship, senior student Forensic Psychiatry elective, and General Psychiatry resident training.  I have been part of the development of the first Introduction to Clinical Medicine groups for students interested in Global Health, involvement in vision and planning for the new curriculum, and responding to local as well as international disasters.

Current Academic Interests

Teaching:I am the statewide Co-Director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine I course as well as the attending physician for medical students and psychiatric residents at my hospital.  I mentor these different types of learners in the areas of adult psychiatry, advanced psychopharmacology, and forensic psychiatry.  I have been pleased to receive a Best Clinical Sciences Professor award from the last two graduating medical classes as well as the Outstanding Faculty Award from our Psychiatry residents last year.

I love to speak to groups about disaster preparedness and response.  I have led seminars on this topic and am a trainer for Psychological First Aid and START mass casualty triage.  I am a state Clinical Director of the Mental Health Disaster Response Team.

Clinical: I am the Medical Director of a 29 bed inpatient psychiatry unit which focuses on the treatment of those with severe mental illness.  I am the leader of the Forensics team at my hospital which works with patients to restore them to competence to stand trial.  I also enjoy working with attorneys and law firms by reviewing cases and the literature surrounding questions involved in those cases.
